Biography - Paul McDonough
Paul McDonough originally started his martial arts
training in Quincy, Massachusetts, studying Uechi-ryu Karate-do under
Senseis Forrest Sanborn and George Bosworth (1989-1990). After attaining
the rank of Green belt, Paul discontinued his studies while working on a
masters and doctoral degree in Exercise Physiology (FSU, 2000). Always
intending to return to martial arts training, Paul started studying Aikido
at the Kansas State University Aikikai under Senseis Jayne Thompson and Jack
Hayes, attaining the rank of Sankyu (2000-2003).
After moving to the Dallas
area, Paul wished to widen his martial arts background, and to that end
started searching for a place where he could learn an integrated martial
arts/self defense system. Eventually, his search was rewarded when he
discovered the Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense in January 2005. Paul
began training with Shihan Chamberlain in Gasan Ryu Kenpo and was promoted
to Shodan in October 2006. Paul also studies Heike Ryu Jiu-Jitsu and
Kodokan Judo at CSSD with Senseis Jim Webb, Kamil Kuroda and Bill Parker.
In addition, Paul has recently begun training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with
several of Carlos Machado’s black belt instructors, including James Brown,
Robert DeFranco and Travis Lutter.
Paul is currently an Assistant Professor at the
University of Texas at Arlington where he teaches in the Kinesiology
department. An avid reader, music fan and movie buff, Paul also enjoys
travel and language; speaking German and a little French.
