Martial-Arts Styles

Gasan Ryu Kenpo

The primary style of martial arts taught at Chamberlain Studios of Self-Defense is Gasan Ryu Kenpo.  Gasan Ryu (Moon-Mountain style) is a practical, efficient, and easy to learn system that incorporates the kicking and punching of Karate, the throws, locks and matt-work of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, the explosive striking power of Kenpo, and the hand techniques of western boxing.  (View the Gasan Ryu video preview).  It is an offshoot of the Hawaiian system of Kajukenbo and Nick Cerio's Kenpo.

The training consists of practice in the following areas:

●  Punching, kicking, striking, blocking and stance fundamentals
●
Break falls, shoulder rolls, take-downs, sweeps and throws
●  Self defense against grabbing attacks

●  Self defense against punching attacks
●  Self defense against weapon attacks (stick, knife, gun)
●  Empty hand kata and weapon kata (Bo, Kama, Sai, Japanese Sword, Chinese Staff)
●  Stand-up sparring (free fighting) and grappling and matt-work
●  History, terminology, and philosophy of the Martial Arts

Jiyushinkai Aikido

Dojo Cho Bill Parker, Head Instructors: Will Schutt, Bill Parker, David Bedard

In Japanese, Aikido literally means "the way of blending energy."  Aikido teaches us to efficiently use energy to blend with and then subdue an opponent or attacker.  Unlike other martial arts that utilize kicks, punches or joint locks, we focus on using kuzushi (off-balancing) and blending movements to manage an opponent's aggressive intent so they are no longer a threat.  Size is not an issue, as even the smallest person is able to apply any technique on the largest person.

Learn more about our particular style of Aikido by visiting the Jita Kyoei website.

Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons, see the class schedule here

Kodokan Judo - CSSD Tamura Judo Program

The CSSD Tamura Judo Program is named after sensei Vince Tamura, the highest ranked Judoka in the United States (seen to the left), and the teacher to most of our Judo instructors.  The program consists of two classes per week and is overseen by Sensei Jim Webb.

The class is team taught by senseis Bill Parker and Kamil Kuroda.  The program utilizes the USJA curriculum for both juniors and adults.

Sensei Jim Webb (a USJA 7th degree Black Belt, kneeling on the left) directs the program.   If you are new to Judo, this class will give you the fundamentals you need to succeed in Judo.  If you have experience or prior training, then this class will help you to perfect your skills and technique under a master instructor.  Testing is done on a quarterly basis with information here on requirements, costs, etc.

Sensei Kamil Kuroda has 30 years in Judo and brings a warm, capable teaching style to the class.  This is a traditional Kodokan Judo program following USJA guidelines.

The picture to the right shows Jim Bregman, Olympic medalist in the 1963 games and past president of the United States Judo Association/USJA, throwing our technical advisor and instructor Jim Webb (the past president of the USJA).  The picture was taken during sensei Tamura's promotion ceremony to Kudan (9th degree Black belt) in 2004 at the Chamberlain Studios headquarters dojo.
